Scouting’s action-oriented approach to education is uniquely designed to equip young people with the competencies to become active global citizens and contribute to peace and sustainable development.

Over the years Scouting has made any extraordinary contribution to improve the sustainability of our planet, promote peace, and tackle inequality.

Already Scouts have contributed more than two billion hours towards sustainable development through World Scouting's flagship initiatives.

Now, as a global Movement, we are taking that commitment one step further with Scouts for SDGs - an unprecedented mobilization is engaging 54 million Scouts to make the world’s largest coordinated youth contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Along the way we plan to deliver a total of 4 billion hours of community service towards the SDGs.

Scouts for SDGs is more than just a campaign or promise, it’s a systematic effort to leverage Scouting's Youth Program and initiatives under the Better World Framework, including Messengers of Peace, to raise awareness and take action for the SDGs.

Creating a Better World

The SDGs are interconnected and indivisible, meaning that no one goal can be achieved without the others. The Creating A Better World SIA looks across SDGs, rather than focusing on one goal at the time. SDGs are interlinked, so addressing only one goal at a time is unlikely to bring the most sustainable solutions. Think about your SIA project in this Area, and identify which SDGs you are targeting, and then identify how they interconnect with others.

Scouting is proud to have given generations of young people equal opportunities to grow and develop their full potential through empowering and enriching experiences regardless of their background.

The Movement is open to everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from. At the 41st World Scout Conference, we pledged to support UN Women’s HeForShe initiative by inspiring millions of Scouts to work towards creating a better, gender-equal world by 2020. Since then, Scouts from all over the world have responded with a resounding “Count me in!” While much has been achieved, a lot more still needs to be done.

That’s why UN Women and World Scouting have together developed a HeForShe Action Kit for Scout Leaders that includes a series of activities designed to get young people of all ages thinking about gender equality and what they can do about it. It is designed for use in all kinds of Scouting activities, from hiking to training sessions, and can be adapted depending on the age and maturity of the Scouts themselves.
